PizzaWe recently had a question regarding homemade pizza. Pizza is a food that just about everyone loves, and though we all like delivery and carry-out every now and then, there is nothing quite like a custom-made pizza you make yourself. You can put everything you want on it, and buying your own ingredients can really make a tastier, more cost-effective pizza.
Though I am not well-known for my "healthy" cooking, there are a lot of ways you health-conscious eaters can cut down on the bad stuff, while keeping the taste! Use whole wheat dough, skim mozzarella cheese, light sauce, and tons of vegetables.
I am not much of a baker, so I tend to buy my pizza doughs, rather than make them myself. Most stores have some variety of fresh pizza dough you can use to make your own fresh pie. However, if you want to make your own, check out http://tinyurl.com/5hedxx for ideas.
Another method that I use at home all the time is using pieces of flatbread instead of dough. You can also use french bread, or anything else that will hold pizza toppings well, but I prefer the flatbread. Just add sauce and cheese, then top with your favorite toppings. The small size makes it perfect for giving each member of the family that custom pizza with just what they like! Experiment with sauces and varieties of cheese and toppings.
I will try to update this post later with images and a guide to making flatbread pizzas at home!
Here are some sauces and toppings I suggest:
Mushrooms (shitake and others)
Put anything you like. Experiment with flavor combinations, and you may be surprised by the wonderful flavors you can find!
