Nikujaga
Is a Japanese stew of meat, potatoes and onion
Stewed in a sweetened soy sauce
A variety of vegetables can be used as well
7 oz thinly sliced beef or pork loin, cut in strips
4 potatoes, cut into quarters
1 onion, wedged
1 large carrot, peeled and cut
2 cup dashi broth, (or beef broth)
2 tablespoons sake
3 tablespoons of sugar
4-5 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Let's get cooking:
Heat oil in a deep pot and sauté the meat on high heat until browned
Add onion, carrot, potato, sake and sugar, sauté together
Pour in stock and bring to a boil
Lower heat to medium, skim off any foam that rises to the surface
Add soy sauce, cover
Simmer until vegetables are softened and the liquid are almost gone
Makes 4 servings
Pairings:
Try with a side of jasmine rice and
a nice hot bowl of miso soup
